Should your training include weapons

Alrighty guys, today we’d like to talk about Should your training include weaponsShould your training include weapons.

Most Martial Arts and Self Defense Systems out there include at least a base minimum of a couple of weapons defenses. A counter to a stab here a dodge of a baseball bat there…but no matter what system you’re training in it is vitally important that you know how to use the weapon you just took away from the bad guy with your disarm.

First let’s talk about how a disarm or a defense against a weapon should work. The reality is most techniques require that the attacker leave their weapon hanging out for a second or two in order for you to be able to apply the move. This just does not happen, as soon as an assailant feels you counter their attack they’re going to move. They will either change the angle of attack or retract the weapon to try again. Every single technique you drill should take this into account because the more realistic the drills the better prepared you are for a real life attack.

Next, you should be able to pull off your defense under stress a significantly high percentage of the time. If you don’t drill under pressure you get a false sense of the distance, timing and the body mechanics behind the move. If you can’t pull it off during stress during class there is simply no way you’re going to be able to do it on the street.

And lastly, why should you learn how to use a knife or a stick? That’s easy…if you take a weapon away from an evil doer, if you don’t know how to use it it’s just going to get in your way.

So in conclusion, train those defenses under stress, hit a Kali class or two a every week and make sure your as prepared as humanly possible for a weapon attack.

Have a great week all and remember to sign up early for the Tactical Unarmed vs. Knife seminar next Saturday the 5th.
